Green lifestyle means you are becoming more aware of environmental consequences for your actions and are consciously making choices that have less negative impact on the earth.

It matters not if you believe global warming is a normal cycle or a human caused emergency; what does matter is that conserving natural resources and protecting the environment from air, and water pollution and becoming overrun with trash and toxic chemicals makes sense, doesn’t it? Our children deserve a place to live that isn’t left toxic by our carelessness.

Living green means you realize this is the only planet humans can live on that we know of, and so you take some responsibility yourself to make conscious choices that help preserve the earth for our future generations. Choices such as conserving water and electricity and recycling are good for the planet.

Preserving the earth is a group project that relies on individual efforts that come together as a whole to make a difference. Since it is for the most part voluntary, how do we get more people interested in going greener? More education on the topics of recycling, effects of pollution, conservation of water and energy would be helpful.

There are many ways we could improve our efforts without totally inconveniencing ourselves. Some people go to extremes regardless of the cause and others do what they can without making sacrifices. We can’t expect green living to be everyone’s passion but we can put forth some effort to do help out and encourage others to do the same.

Truly going green involves much more than saving water, electric and recycling such as eating organic food to avoid pesticides, doing business with green minded companies, wearing organic clothing, riding a bike to work rather than driving, and so on. Many of us will never get to that stage of earth friendliness, but if we just reduce waste of water and electricity and recycle the basics, that would be a good place to start.

While some being green measures initially cost more money, for example generating your own wind or solar power for your home and replacing appliances with energy efficient models, most efforts will save you money within a reasonable period of time.

The following are just a few tips that anyone can do

recycle everything you can

share usable items

use recycled items such as copy paper

install a programmable thermostat

stop using disposable things such as paper plates, styrofoam cups

cut down use of electricity by turning things off , switch to CFL lighting, use fans more, wash clothes in cold water

cut down use of water by installing low flow devices in bathrooms, and generally running less water

continue learning about this topic and share your knowledge with others

teach your kids good eco-friendly habits

Once you start making some changes toward living green you will find yourself being more aware of more changes you can make, and that will result in more planet friendly decisions.

save energy

Building a solar powered home will not only help save you money, it will also help save our planet. Solar powered homes are now more mainstream, as technology advances and becomes more sophisticated. Whether you try out your DIY skills or hire an outside contractor to do the work it is still satisfying to know you are becoming self-dependent. You may be able to take advantage of tax credits which is another incentive. You need to do some research to find the best option but there are now many proven options so you can be sure they have worked for other people.

The misconceptions that were once held that the houses needed to be smaller or located in a particular place no longer apply and there are now thousands who have jumped onto the solar bandwagon.

A modern solar powered home will have all the conveniences and electrical appliances of a conventional home without the energy cost. The maintenance is very low and the only cost is the initial investment which will be recouped in a short space of time.

The solar panels need to hook up with a controller to regulate the system . This will allow enough energy in hand to cover those darker days but even cloudy days will be provididng some energy. As a precaution there will be a propane or gas filled backup generator to ensure there are no blackout periods and to ensure continuity of supply, but you could even use a solar powered generator if you are 100% commited to solar power.

All of the equipment is available from good local hardware stores nowadays, but you will get better advice from a specialist.

If you are looking to give it a go in 2010 to go solar then you will find a comprehensive free plan with source guides for the components and even forms for tax submission at Green Power Easy

The interest in harnessing natural power for domestic use has grown in recent times with the growing concern about planetary waste and more recently with the effect of the global recession which has turned people towards a more economic solution to domestic energy. By using hot water solar panels the sun’s natural energy can be harnessed for domestic energy requirements.

Solar heaters use heat-transfer fluids, similar to anti-freeze which gets hot without boiling, to transfer heat through tubes of solar collectors.

The fluid circulates through tubes in a highly-insulated holding tank containing water to be heated. With each cycle, more heat gets transferred and the fluid then returns to the solar collector to be re-heated.

There are two distinct types of solar water heater systems:

Active systems use pumps and controls to regulate the passage of water

Passive systems combine the collector and storage elements in one unit

Solar heating can be the sole source for a domestic supply or it can supplement conventional systems where there is a high demand, dependent on the household’s water equirements.

Because of the simplicity of design of solar water heaters they are very low-maintenace. The systems are dependent on the local climate and special consideration should be given to freeze-protection requirements. There are various designs and qualified solar water heater distributors can help to identify the best combination of units to use. The industry provides alternative solutions to your needs depending on the climatic regional requirements and there are accreditation schemes to ensure consumers are getting the best designed system for their needs.

A solar water heater will save you money but it will also help protect the environment. Conventional domestic heating can produce one to two tons of carbon dioxide in a year and other pollutants, such as sulphur dioxides, carbon monoxide and nitrous oxides are also displaced when a homeowner makes the switch and taps into natural solar power.

DIY solar panels are a great solution for your house, your finances and for the health of our planet. By utilizing natural energy produced easily by solar panels, saving a large amount of cash on electricity bills is desirable and this can be an 90% saving! This type of natural energy is employed in many situations and for many types of devices already. It is progressively being used, not only in people’s homes and businesses, but also in commercial properties and for some industrial power supplies. You may be astonished to learn that there are even power pumping stations and some telecommunications equipment that utilize the power produced by solar panels and other natural resources.

Apart from being a simple and inventive solution for saving money on energy bills, it also assists the environment and as such is often named green power’ or ‘renewable energy’. It not only saves money but reduces the planet’s carbon footprint, which also applies to other environmentally friendly power sources such as wind power.

DIY Solar Panels are a set of photovoltaic cells which essentially generate an environmentally friendly solar power. The optimal performance for this way of energy production is making sure that the cells are likely to capture the sun for as much of the day as possible, and without the need for being in an equitorial climate! They will work virtually anywhere. The solar panels are usually mounted on rooftops, though it is possible to mount them on special stand alone frames too. The most key part of setting up solar panels is to make sure that they are situated where they will get the most exposure to sunlight and to avoid any shade if possible. Clearly the more sun that they are exposed to, the more energy they will collect.

When preparing to construct your own solar cells for your solar panels, make sure that the utmost efficiency is reached. There are various products available today that make it very easy for the average person to build their own solar panels. Do it yourself solar panels are easy and economic to build and with the correct instruction manual and materials, it is feasible to start making immediate savings on energy. An additional benefit in some locations can be the trading of excess energy back to the energy company!

There are two reasons to green your home by installing solar and (or) wind power systems – whether it be small, supplemental systems such as solar powered water heaters, or large systems that will power the entire home.

First, you will save money by reducing your need for electricity from your local utility provider. Secondly, you will be reducing your carbon footprint and impact on the environment.

The cost of energy is always going up. Gas prices are higher, electricity is higher…everything is higher, and as is the nature of things, that trend will only continue. In an effort to save money, many people are looking for alternative ways to power their homes. The solution is rather to convert to wind and (or) solar energy.

Let me give you the basic uses of solar power…

- Electricity – A solar electric generating system can allow you to reduce your electric bill to zero.- Heating – You can heat your home in winter inexpensively.

Of all the energy used in the United States, only 1% is from renewable energy such as solar and (or) wind power. Think of the money to be saved, and spent on other things…by converting to solar and (or) wind power.

Can any home use a Solar and Wind Powered System? The amount of power that collectors can absorb from the sun is contingent on a number of factors. What is the climate? Is it sunny all the time? Does the sun have access to roof or ground collectors?

Benefits from going solar are many. You will receive rebates and subsidies offered by utilities providers,State and Federal Governments. Be aware that the amount of these rebates will vary, depending on how closely to the “ideal” of solar and (or)Wind power you can come. If you’re installing equipment for a home office or business, you may be able to depreciate certain items.Measure your savings…Keep track of your energy bills on a monthly basis to see how much they go down.In addition, remember that if you convert your home or business entirely too solar and (or) wind power, and are on the power grid with an intertie system, you can sell back your unused electricity to the utility.

Do your research. Going off-grid is a major step, but a great investment in your home or business. Doing your research is to also deal with people face to face. Talk to contractors who do this type of work. Talk to people who’ve gone off-grid themselves.

PV Systems: Two types Standalone: These require batteries.Intertie: This works in conjunction with your utility grid.

Stand-alone PV Systems, with batteries, are excellent to use when no power grid is available. For those individuals concerned about losing power in their homes – as might happen in the aftermath of a hurricane, or a violent storm, a stand-alone PV system makes an excellent back-up generator. It is quieter than a gas-powered generator, and needs no ventilation, and doesn’t emit any pollution.

Wind and Water Power:

Windmills and hydro-power generators are also great sources of energy. Unlike solar energy, windmills and water power are available at any time of the day or night.

Wind power Advantages:

Wind power can be generated any time..Wind is available almost everywhere The energy can be stored in batteries for later use.

Water power Advantages:

Water power generates more kilowatts per cost than any other energy source. Batteries are typically not needed. Power can be generated day or night, in any weather. Hydro-systems are relatively maintenance free.

Well I’ve discussed a little about adding solar and wind power systems on to existing homes, however. Apartment buildings and businesses are also getting into the act. May, 2009 in San Diego, an apartment building has just opened. It’s the first 100% solar-powered affordable housing with 42-units. A model for Green Living of the Future.

Russ Miles

Presently, I’m a home re-modeler and avid custom woodworker. These days I have been looking for ways to reduce my dependency on non-renewable energy. The people I come into contact have the same concerns and are looking to do the same. http://www.MakeGreen-Power.com

Solar power has received a lot of attention as one of the answers to our energy crisis. The fact that solar panels provide energy from a clean and free source, the sun, makes it a viable option. But many homeowners are asking: what sort of system would work for me? Well of course that depends on your situation and what you are looking to get out of solar energy. Let’s talk about your options for small simple systems and the advantages and disadvantages of each option.

Integrated Solar

This is probably the smallest of all photovoltaic systems. These can be found where the solar panel is built right into the appliance that it is powering. For instance calculators, garden lights, fountains, flashlights, and many other small electronic devices are powered by the sun.

Advantages of Integrated Solar Power

* Portability. These units often can be moved easily and since they are powered by solar they don’t require power cords.

* Maintenance Free. Maintenance is virtually nonexistent and they do not require expensive fuels.

* Batteries. These units have an internal battery which lasts much longer than the common battery we’re used to.

Disadvantages of Integrated Solar Power

* Scalability. General these units are small and the power they require is minimal. For larger appliances that consume more energy having integrated solar panels is not practical.

* Part Replacement. Integrated products usually are hard to take apart and fix. For example, if the battery quits working you may just have to replace the entire unit.

Direct Solar

This is the simplest way to get power from the sun’s rays. Direct solar simply feeds the energy that is collected by a small array to an appliance or pump without a battery. The system usually consists of a small panel, a mounting mechanism, and the pump or appliance.

Advantages of Direct Solar Power

* Cost. These systems usually are fairly inexpensive since they don’t require batteries.

* Installation. Direct units are relatively easy to install as long as the area has ample sunshine. Since power cords are not required, almost anyone with a few tools can install them.

* Remote Capability. Homeowners and business owners love these systems for their water features and well pumps that can fill tanks or ponds during the day when the sun shines and then shut off as soon as the sun sets.

* Maintenance Free. Maintenance is virtually nonexistent and they do not require expensive fuels.

Disadvantages of Direct Solar Power

DC Power. Solar panels produce direct current (DC) power and many appliances require alternating current (AC) power.

* Storage. Since these systems don’t have batteries, they don’t run when it is cloudy or at night.

Solar-Battery-DC Systems

Many DC systems can be powered with small panels and battery storage systems. These systems will consist of a solar panel, mounting system, battery bank, charge controller and the connection to the electronic device. The charge controller ensures that PV units do not overcharge the batteries.

Advantages of Solar-Battery-DC Systems

* Storage. These systems can store the sun’s energy for use at night or on cloudy days.

* Remote Capability. These systems are great for lighted signs, fountains, out-buildings and pumps that need to work regardless of sunshine and where access to power is an issue.

* Lighting and Pumping. Since lighting and pumping are very popular tasks for photovoltaic systems, there are special high-efficiency pumps and lights made exactly for these applications.

Disadvantages of Solar-Battery-DC Systems

DC Power. Solar panels produce direct current (DC) power and many appliances require alternating current (AC) power.

* Cost. Batteries can add significant cost to the installation depending on how much storage you need.

* Maintenance. Batteries require regular maintenance and need to be replaced more often than solar panels.

If you are thinking about a PV power system for your needs, you should contact a solar professional. They can custom design a solar power solution for almost any application and location.

Energy is produced from a wind powered generator when strong movements in air movement caused by a substantial variation in air pressure, drives a turbine which by revolving then gets converted into electrical energy causes an electric current.

What are the advantages of home wind power kits?

Existing sources of home energy are causing damaging environmental pollution and alternative methods have to be found at a high cost to the environment and the consumer’s pocket. Wind energy and solar power are becoming feasible alternatives globally, where their power can be harnessed and especially where used together. Modern home-made windpower units are being made by consumers with a cheap one-off cost to replace the draining cost of paying for power as it is consumed. This is a natural solution, using the constant power of the wind . Regeneration of electricity systems is certainly possible by using these kits, hence the demand for them is increasing. Once you’vegot an understanding of how the system works it is easy for the average DIY enthusiast to build and install a unit.

Electricity is a major cost for every household and definite savings can be made with these kits. Typically, wind energy kits can bring down electric bills by an average fifty per cent, this can be more and can completely replace a households’ energy consumption if combined with solar power units. Surplus generation of electricity is also possible, where a house is in a suitable location to harness natural power. These unutilized amounts can be sold to local utility providers, in order to earn some cash and payback the installation costs. Convenience and ease of use are common features of all wind turbines. The turbines are driven by two or three blades, attached to a rotor. The rotor connects to a principal shaft, which, in turn, rotates the turbine. This entire process generates electricity. The optimimum height for the location of the turbines is about 100 feet (30 metres) as this ensures the strength of the wind will be sufficient to drive the turbine consistently . There are various sources of information available, including books and manuals, and on-line resources.

Working advantages and downsides of home wind power kits:

As described, the main advantage to the consumer is the cost-saving on energy, whereas to the more globally-thinking consumer the reduction of the carbon footprint is also a substantial side-benefit.

Make sure you are positioning and setting-up the kit for maximum effectiveness and look for a manual giving sources for cheap components and batteries. The way to wire the system as well as the necessary security precautions are also requiring specialised knowledge which will make sure you do a professional job. After carefully going through all this in the manual, you can easily install your wind power kit and benefit from this in the future.

It has just been relegated to the background following the rising cost of real estate; newer more advanced building materials, design and the limitation of resources.

Building design has always taken into account the aspect of the building in relation to receiving the optimium sunshine through the day and this is always an important factor in architectural design since man started building homes.

The ancients, although not familiar with such phrases as passive solar and thermal mass were building in compact proportion, employing overhangs, incorporating insulation and building in ways that directed the airflow within the structure and producing well lit, well ventilated spaces using the relative position of the sun to the orientation of their structures.

Once again, as the conventional sources of energy have become more expensive, homeowners are turning to the sun for energy requirements.

Since the 1950s, harnessing the suns rays has been developing and today the solar cell technology has achieved very efficient levels that modern (so-called green house) designs apply the sun’s power to provide energy for the home.

Although solar energy is free, the devices that harness and convert it to run our appliances are not. To provide solar energy for the home, solar cells called photovoltaic made from semi-conducting materials, are grouped into modules. These solar panels can then be mounted on rooftops, yards or open spaces where it can capture the maximum amount of sunlight.

Whenever possible, the panels should be installed facing South to catch the most sunlight, but tracking systems are also used to follow the direction of the sun. The solar panels collect energy from the sunlight. The process basically is that when the panels are exposed to sunlight, the electrons are separated form the atoms. This movement of the electrons creates electricity.

To store power, pumps are often used – circulating water in the cells. The water goes into a storage tank where the power is stored, ready for use.

In spite of all the development in solar energy though, the use of this technology is not enough to provide power to the whole house. The best method so far can only fulfill about 80% of a households power needs. The employment of solar energy for the home will still require the use of the conventional power distribution method, however the harnessing of wind power can augment this.

The bonus for using solar or wind power for a lot of consumers is the positive effect on the environment compared to conventional means, which emit horrendous amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere to produce relatively meagre amounts of elecricity.

With environmental benefits and increases in conventional energy supplies, the technology for solar energy has been undergoing rapid phases of development. Experts are confident that within five years, powering the home through the solar method will be made widely available for those who prefer it as its sole energy source.

If you enjoy DIY projects and have a suitable aspect you can make your own solar-powered ($200 per unit)and wind-powered energy ($140 per unit) gaining all the benefits without being dependent on your utility company.

There are various guides available, which include plans, product directories and online video.
